about

The tracks for today’s download are from the "V Series”. The V stands for Vienna, and all 7 movements are written for string orchestra, percussion, and improvising soloist.

About 15 years ago, the Vienna Jazz Festival approached my good friend Briggan Krauss with a proposal for his trio “300” (myself, Briggan, and Kenny Wolleson). They wanted us to perform for 3 nights. Each night the trio would close the set, and the opening set would be one of us leading an ensemble of local musicians from Vienna.

Briggan chose some electronic musicians to work with, and Kenny picked some local players, and friends, to play some of his tunes. I, half in jest, wrote the festival an email and said, “I would like a string orchestra." Needless to say I knew Vienna was filled with incredible orchestral musicians. Since this involved about 30 players I wasn’t really expecting them to say yes, but they did. In the end, the piece was conducted by my good friend Christian Muthspiel, with Joanna Lewis- who was soon to become a very good friend- as concertmaster.

It was Joanna’s Koehne Quartet who recorded two of my string quartets for the CD Whispers, Hymns, and a Murmur (Tzadik).

The result was about 30 minutes of music, in 7 movements. Most of the movements were written for strings plus two vibraphones, one tuned to 440 and the other to 444. In a couple of the movements Kenny also played drums, and on one or two I played minimal piano or electronics. Briggan was the improviser on all of the pieces.

At the time, I had never written for any size orchestra-the largest ensemble I had composed for was a 16 piece jazz orchestra. This set of pieces really gave me the impetus, and the confidence, to compose Joe Hill, which is scored for chamber orchestra, voice and improvising soloist, and more recently "Those Who Remain”, which is written for full orchestra and improvising soloist, and premiered just a few months ago.

The timing of this is prescient. Tomorrow I will be launching my Hatchfund campaign to help fund a studio recording of “Those Who Remain”. It is an expensive endeavor, and I hope you will consider supporting it.

I hope you enjoy the music!
