I have been back east for the last week. During that time I have been upstate a bit in and around Bard College where my son goes to school, in Troy where my daughter is living, and seeing various friends in the general vicinity. We went to visit Bobby Previte and his wife Andrea at their new- or at least new to me- home near Hudson, New York. So I thought I'd feature a track this week that features Bobby Previte in no uncertain terms.
At this time I was often making tracks where everything would be finished before I put the drums down. First using sequencers and drum machines, then live musicians, including all the soloists. This was the case with this track. Hans Wendl and I were producing the track. We were at The Power Station in New York. We went into the lounge, while Bobby worked with the engineer to get drum sounds. About 20 minutes later they came out and got us. "We ran a pass," they said, "to see if you like the drum sound."
Bobby had never even heard the song before. I assumed we'd spend an hour or two working on how to approach it musically. Instead I listened to it and simply said, "let's keep it, we're done."
The title is, obviously, a double entendre.... We spent a lot of time, while touring in Europe by train, playing Hearts, the card game. If you know the game, you know the expression, "Hearts Are Broken.”
