When our daughter Nica was born we were living on St. Marks Pl. just west of Tompkins Sq. Park. My friend J.A. Deane, aka Dino, was leaving NYC but wanted to keep his tiny 4th floor walk-up on 33rd and 3rd so that he and his wife could stay there on occasion. Given the size of our apartment we rented it from him, so I could have a place to work. Most days I would put Nica in the stroller, bring a bottle, and go up there. Usually she would nap and I would work on headphones.
The record entitled "The President" was made there with an 8 track reel to reel, a tascam board, a spring reverb, a DX-7, an RX-11 drum machine and some friends. Bobby Previte played electronic drums-because we couldn't make any actual noise, and all the guitars and basses went direct, no amps-frankly a recording nightmare. It was the first time I'd ever asked Bill Frisell to play on something of mine, and here he is.
The theme between the keys and the sax is offset a little more each time, and the solo breaks are longer finally settling in at the end before the fade.
The title comes from a lyric in a bedtime song Robin made up and sang to Nica as a baby.
