about

Like "River of Whiskey", posted a few weeks ago, "Don't Stop Now" is one of two compositions for the New York Composers Orchestra that has never been released publicly, or recorded in a studio for that matter. This recording also comes from the same concert at Queen Elizabeth Hall, with a mostly UK band along with myself, Bobby Previte, Marty Ehrlich, Robin Holcomb and Doug Wieselman.

The center piece of the composition is a tenor "battle" between 2 of my favorite tenor players, Marty and Doug. Luckily, they don't approach it as a "battle" at all, and I love the way they maintain a sense of purpose and space, dare I call it good taste, even as all the other parts come in. It's back to the same old idea of serving the ensemble vs. the ego.

The full title of the piece is Don't Stop Now (P.W.) The P.W. stands for Philip Wilson, and I wrote it immediately after hearing of Philip's untimely and truly tragic death, a situation that was bad and could have easily been avoided. If you don't know who Philip Wilson was, look him up. We weren't exactly friends, he wasn't an easy guy, but we played together some and I was even in a band of his briefly. In fact an analog synthesizer of mine blew up on stage at CBGB's during a gig in his band. Philip was the original drummer in the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and went on to play in the classic version of the Paul Butterfield Blues band with, I believe, saxophonists David Sanborn and Gene Dinwiddie. He wrote a tune that ended up on the 2nd Woodstock album, entitled "Love March." In any event he was a brilliant and important creative voice in the music of his day.

I hope you enjoy the music.
