about

John Zorn's Naked City was a blast to play in, but John's compositional approach was never a huge influence on my own tunes, especially his more cut and paste/genre slashing pieces. But some of the earliest tunes that I wrote for the band Pigpen may be the exception, and the tune posted here is a prime example.

"Cuz, I'm in Love Yeah" refers to the Louis Armstrong sample that is in the tune. The other samples, if I recall correctly, are all taken from samples of my daughter Nica when she was a toddler. In one she says "fingernail" in the most peculiar fashion, and in another she sings a melody, which forms the basis for the melody played on sax.

This was fun to play live, but its hard to believe I had to drag around a 3 rack space Akai sampler to accomplish this, although I later moved to a 1 rack space Alesis sampler that I hated, but desperately needed something "smaller." In Naked City sometimes I would have to change samples, all on floppy discs, between tunes. Often the 30 seconds seemed like 5 minutes, especially when the tune was only 30 seconds itself.

Pigpen was my first "Seattle Band," and featured Fred Chalenor on bass, and the very young Mike Stone and Briggan Krauss. I met Briggan almost immediately after moving to Seattle in 1989 and we have been musical partners ever since. I had met Fred through another Fred (Frith) and Briggan recommended Mike. I see Mike all the time since he still lives in Seattle, and we play together in various things. Briggan moved to NY years ago but we play when we can. Fred I have, unfortunately, lost track of.

Pigpen will re-unite, at least most of us, at the end of February as part of the OK Hotel Festival which will be at The Royal Room in Seattle the last weekend in February. The OK Hotel was a fantastic place, and Pigpen on a number of occasions did long weekends of "Pigpen plus Guests" that included Bill Frisell, Soundgarden's Matt Cameron, Michael Shrieve, The Billy Tipton Memorial Quartet, Robin Holcomb, Reggie Watts and more.

For this one, Geoff Harper will be playing bass, and some of the same folks will be joining us, and some new ones.

I hope you enjoy the music.
