about

Yesterday was my son's birthday. Lowell just turned 20, and he was born, as my wife Robin commented, "on the shortest day after the longest night of the year."

So I must have written this just about 20 years ago. It is titled "Brand Spankin' New"- written in honor of his arrival. It is also the title track of the CD, released on the Knitting Factory Label a year or two later.

Written for Zony Mash- with Tim Young, Andy Roth and Fred Chalenor- the album was recorded in an empty house, graciously provided by some friends who were about to sell it, in Chimacum WA, which is out on the peninsula en route to Pt. Townsend.

The four of us went out there for about a week, along with Tucker Martine who engineered. We dragged some DA-88s and a bunch of mics, mic pres, etc. and set up shop. I did most of the cooking. Most days we got going around 2 or 3 in the afternoon and worked till 3 or 4 in the morning. The place was essentially unfurnished, and there wasn't much else to do; even the days were dark and rainy.

The vibe of the session isn't particularly well represented on this track, probably better represented on the opening track, "Slide By," or on "Chimacum After Hours." The definitive track in this regard is "Electric Sandstorm," written by Tim Young. That take owed a lot to the rain and the night during a typical Olympic Peninsula winter.

This one is decidedly more upbeat, as befits the subject. Everyone sounds great- I think- with another classic Tim Young solo bringing us back home to the theme. A theme, by the way, which owes more than a little to Thelonious Monk's "Trinkle Tinkle."

Hope you enjoy the music!
