about

Today’s download of the week is “After All These Years.”

The Horvitz, Morris Previte Trio may have been, for me at least, the most important band I ever had. I had come to NYC to meet the likes of Lester Bowie, Frank Lowe, Sonny Murray, anyone who had ever played with Cecil Taylor, and so on. The music coming out of Chicago was particularly important to me, and over time I did get to meet, and play, with some of those folks. As it happened, I fell in almost immediately with all the folks that later became known as the “downtown scene” including Bobby Previte, Polly Bradfield, Elliott Sharp, Dave Hofstra, Bill Frisell, Fred Frith, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Eugene Chadbourne, Steve Bernstein, Arto Lindsay, Zeena Parkin, Guy Klucevsek etc. Butch was the glue between those scenes in a lot of ways- he stayed true to his roots but was always looking for new voices and new ways of expanding the music. I owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude.

I was intrigued by everything I did in those days, and I got a lot out of playing with my heroes, and also finding my way in this other music, including Zorn’s game pieces, and later the slash and burn style of Naked City, etc. But I was also hearing a third thing, and I couldn’t quite figure it out. The Horvitz, Morris, Previte trio was when I found my voice, and there is something essential in the music we made that I have kept ever since.

The trio used keyboards and drum machines live, including playing the drum machines themselves live, something that is common now, and has been for a long time, but not then. We also used a lot of electronics but at a very quiet level. The group was a chamber ensemble to be sure. Bobby played drums often, but sometimes drums and another instrument at the same time, or, for example, in one piece he simply played the theme to a piece of mine over and over again on the piano, while Butch played cornet and I improvised on electronics. I will say that DX-7s never sounded so good!

This piece does not represent all that. It is just a favorite tune. Bobby on Marimba, me on DX-7 emulating a vibraphone, and Butch playing his horn. The title, "After All These Years” refers to my life thus far with my wife, composer and pianist Robin Holcomb. I have to laugh just a little bit now that when I titled it, we had been together an astounding 10 years! Now it's been 40. She got on a plane this morning to hear the premiere of her first piece for full orchestra, and its a wonder and a treasure that we are still together and still both making music. After all the years- indeed.

I hope you enjoy the music.
