This is the first track from "55: Music and Dance in Concrete," which for me represents one of the most important new works of mine since 2010. The entire project, which not only included these sound pieces, but also an installation with video and live dance, is something that I am both consistently proud of, and also a technique and an aesthetic that I intend to actively and vigorously pursue in the future.
A collaboration with engineer/producer Tucker Martine, video artist Yohei Saito, and choreographer Yukio Suzuki, this work also included 12 musicians, improvisers and chamber musicians, and, for me, months in front of my computer creating these pieces from the sound samples that were previously recorded.
The piece here, 55 (1), is the first piece I made, while in residency at the Blue Mountain Center. It took me close to a week to create and complete, and set the stage for how I approached all the other pieces. All of the sounds come from the composed and improvised pieces, recorded at Fort Worden in Pt. Townsend, WA, in a variety of concrete bunkers, tunnels and the cistern.
