about

My brother Philip would have been 55 years old this October 4th. He left us over 10 years ago, just a few months shy of his 45th birthday.

I will be posting 2 tracks in his memory.

Tuesday 9/29 "Philip". From my first "major label release" entitled "Bring Yr Camera" on Nonesuch Records. I wrote the keyboard part one day in my apartment in Hoboken when I was in my early thirties, and Phil in his mid-twenties, followed by the melody. When we had a memorial for Phil years later at St Marks Church in NYC we played this song to open the ceremony-not the original band but with Kenny Wolleson, Tim Luntzel, Stew Cutler and Doug Weiselman. I remarked in my eulogy to Phil that I didn't really know why I had written this piece until then. It just seemed to be "Philip", but really it was about me, and it took losing him to feel how keenly I would miss him. Dave Tronzo does some great slide breaks, and Elliott Sharp's solo on this is one of my favorites. We were in the Power Station and I remember going into the lock-out room where his amp was, and the hiss and hum were too loud to tolerate, and that was before he started playing!
